CASTLE RUINS and CASTLE TOWN 城と城下町

A grand castle once covered an expansive area of some 1,000,000 square meters in mountainous terrain at an elevation of 325 meters above sea level. Stone walls and part of the gates which remind us of that once flourishing time are now scattered about as if blending with the beautiful nature of the mountains. This creates the beauty and atmosphere of a style reminiscent of the traditional Japanese aesthetic sense wabi-sabi.

高さ海抜325m、面積1,000,000㎡にも及ぶ山間部の広大な敷地に築かれた巨大な城の跡。華やかだった頃を忍ぶ石垣や門の一部などが山々の美しい自然と溶け合うように散在し、「わびさび」にも近い日本的な造形美と風情をつくりだしています

There was a group of top Japanese temple craftsmen in the town developed at the foot of Oka Castle around 1600. They built beautiful temples such as Aizendo. There are many ruins and works of art which tell us of the time when Taketa flourished as a castle town.

岡城の城下に築かれたまちには1600年頃、日本における当時の社寺建築の最高峰の匠集団がいて、「愛染堂」などの美しい社寺を残しました。そのほか城下町として栄えた当時を今に伝える遺跡や芸術品が数多く残されています。

While Japan sought to isolate itself from the world from the 16th to 18th century, Christian and European culture was welcomed in Oita Prefecture. Taketa City was influenced especially from early days by Dutch and Spanish culture. The influence can be seen in the stone walls of Oka Castle.

「鎖国」時代の日本にあって、1500年代～1700年代にかけて大分県では「キリシタン・南蛮文化」が花開きました。中でも竹田市はその先駆けを担う土地として、オランダやスペイン文化の影響を少なからず受けました。その名残は岡城の石垣の形にもある言われています。
