The building that houses Art Space Café Okura Shimizu-yu evolved from a rice granary to a public bath before becoming a gallery café. The interior of the café features retro tiles that evoke the atmosphere of 80 years ago when it was a public bath, and the posts from when it was a granary give the interior of the café a mysterious sense of unity that fills it with a nostalgic Japanese flavor.
The first-floor café space offers a delicious Japanese menu that includes udon noodles and set meals with seasonal small dishes all served in and on antique tableware. The second floor is a gallery exhibiting products created by local artisans.
城下町の長い歴史の中で、米蔵から銭湯、ギャラリーカフェへとその役割を移してきた、日本でもとても珍しいお店。80年ほど前に銭湯だった面影を残すレトロなタイルや、もっと昔に蔵であった名残である梁が混在する店内は、それでいて不思議な統一感があり、懐かしい日本の風情に溢れています。
1階のカフェスペースでは季節の小鉢が並ぶセットやうどんなど、和のメニューをとっておきの食器で提供します。２階はギャラリーになっていて、地元作家の作品展示などが楽しめます。
