Taketa Christian Museum | travel taketa

Although not widely known, Taketa was one of the eight major regions where Christianity was propagated during its early days in Japan in the 16th century. Even after Christianity was prohibited by government decree in 1612, adherents continued to pass down their beliefs for generations.

The traces of Christianity remaining in the city include the Bell of Santiago, a national important cultural property, and many other valuable items that tell the history of Christianity in Japan are all exhibited at this museum. They show how Christianity grew in this region and survived the severe oppression Christians experienced.

あまり知られていませんが、竹田は日本におけるキリスト教の創成期である16世紀に「八大布教地」として栄えました。そしてその後「禁教令」（1612年）によってキリスト教弾圧が強化された後も脈々と信仰が受け継がれた、類い希な歴史を持つ場所です。

市内各所に残されたキリスト教繁栄の痕跡や、国指定重要文化財「サンチャゴの鐘」をはじめとする遺物たち。「竹田キリシタン資料館」には日本におけるキリスト教の光と影をものがたる貴重な資料が展示されています。
