Kannon-ji Temple Juroku Rakan Stone Statues (Sixteen Arhats)

Statues of arhats are lined up irregularly on natural rock. They stand along the approach to Kannon-ji Temple, which was founded in 1618. The Sixteen Arhats were devoted followers of Buddha who took a vow to be faithful to his teachings.

The statues were carved from the relatively soft rocks that spewed out during eruptions of Mt. Aso some 90,000 years ago. Each statue has a unique face, whose gentle and friendly expression transcends both time and religion.

To the rear of the statues is an operational radio tower. The contrast of old and new is very unique and well worth seeing.

自然石の上に不規則に並ぶ聖者の像。1618年に建立された観音寺の参道に、「十六羅漢」はあります。十六羅漢とは、仏法を大切に守ることを誓った16人の仏弟子のことです。

このあたりには、９万年前の阿蘇火山の大噴火によってもたらされた比較的やわらかく加工しやすい岩石があり、この像はその岩でつくられました。お顔の表情は一人ひとり違って個性的。やさしく親しみやすい表情に、時代や宗教を超えた魅力を感じることでしょう。

像の後ろには現代の電波塔があり、そのコントラストがつくる独特の風景も見どころのひとつです。
