Standing atop a steep landform created by large volcanic eruptions from Mt. Aso, Oka Castle Ruins cover an area measuring 1,000,000 square meters.

The structure looks like a fortress. While the buildings no longer remain, the stone walls are a major attraction.

Enjoy the beauty of stone masonry combining stones of various shapes by the most skilled craftsmen in Japan at that time. With its unique beauty scattered over the area, the landscape evokes the solemnity of the castle tower in the old days.

Take an enjoyable stroll around the ruins surrounded by the seasonal beauty of nature. It takes a minimum of 30 minutes to complete the round trip from the parking area, to Ote-mon Gate, and to the Main Enclosure where the castle tower was built. There’s no better way to relax than touring the ruins while enjoying the landscape. The observation spots offer panoramic views of Mt. Aso and the Kuju Mountain Range. When tired from walking, you can take a rest at a free rest house in the grounds.

阿蘇火山の大噴火がつくり出した険しい地形の上に築かれた天然の要塞。「岡城跡」は、面積1,000,000㎡にも及ぶ広大な城跡です。

今では建物部分は残っていませんが、残されている数多くの石垣が最大の魅力のひとつ。

当時の日本の最高技術をもって様々な形の石が見事に組まれた造形の美しさを堪能してください。独特の造形美が敷地内に散在する光景には、在りし日の荘厳な天守閣の姿を想起させる、深い情緒があります。

また、四季折々の美しさを感じながら、遺跡内を散策できるのも魅力です。駐車場から大手門をとおり、天守閣のあった「本丸」まで往復最短で30分ですが、途中の風景を楽しみながら敷地内をくまなく見学するのがオススメです。いくつもある展望スポットから、九州を代表する「阿蘇山」や「くじゅう連山」などの山々を一望することができます。敷地内には無料の休憩所もあります。
