Born in 1879, Rentaro Taki became a musician who represented the dawn of Western music in Japan. He wrote Western-style melodies for Japanese lyrics to create popular songs. They can still be heard here and there today, some in elementary school music textbooks and others in train departure announcement melodies. Kojo no Tsuki, a composition that evokes images of the old Oka Castle in Taketa, is a masterpiece that embodies the Japanese sense of beauty.
This Japanese-style home, where he spent his childhood, has been remodeled into a museum. Letters, photos, and videos related to him are exhibited alongside his musical scores. This remarkable place lets you feel the essence of Japanese music created in beautiful nature that changes over the seasons.
瀧廉太郎は1879年生まれ、日本の西洋音楽黎明期を代表する音楽家です。西洋音楽の旋律を取り入れながら、日本語の歌詞がなじむようにつくられた数々の曲は、小学校の音楽の教科書に載っているほか鉄道の発車メロディーに使われるなど、現代まで脈々と歌い継がれています。
中でもここ竹田にある岡城をイメージしてつくられたといわれる「荒城の月」という曲の古城をモチーフにしたその世界観は、日本人の美意識を象徴するかのような傑作です。
多感な少年時代を過ごした純日本家屋の家が、手紙や写真、直筆の譜面、映像などを見られる記念館となっていています。四季に移ろう自然の中から生まれた日本の音楽の真髄を感じられる、貴重な空間です。
