The large amount of bamboo in the area is believed to have given Taketa its name (Taketa means bamboo field in Japanese). Bamboo is very common in Japan, used as building material for homes and daily commodities since ancient times.
In November of each year, approximately 20,000 bamboo lanterns light up the castle town of Taketa at night. During this event, cultural properties in town are lit up by artists called kewai-shi, to create a deep, quiet atmosphere that evokes black-and-white ink paintings.
Performers have held concerts in many locations throughout Taketa because of the unique atmosphere of the area, where merry rhythms from traditional Japanese instruments become part of the scenery.
竹田は、その名の由来とも言われる竹林が豊富にある地域です。竹は古来より建築材料や日用品に使われるなど、日本人にとても馴染み深い素材です。
毎年11月、竹でつくられた約2万本の竹灯籠が、夜の竹田城下町を美しく照らすイベントが行われます。「化粧師」と呼ばれるアーティストたちによって城下町の文化財が丁寧にライトアップされるその光景は、水墨画の世界のように深く、静かな趣です。
多くのアーティストがコンサートをいたるところで開催しているのも、古くから文化活動の盛んであったこの土地ならではの演出です。賑やかなリズムや和楽器の調べなど、それぞれがBGMとして風景に溶け込みます。
